How to create custom covers for Instagram story highlights

How to create custom covers for Instagram story highlights by EG Media Co. | instagram, social media tips, custom covers, gram gang, instagram story highlights

Have you ever wondered how people manage to add a cute cover for their highlights? Instagram highlights are fairly new to the Instagram game, but they are so useful if you are a business owner. Sometimes people don’t have time to look at your Instagram stories (yup I can vouch that 24 hours in a day just isn’t enough) so with the new highlights you’re able to add stories that well… you want to highlight🤷🏻‍♀️. As a business owner this is a huge advantage! There are so many users that explore different pages so if they find something useful on yours it can be an easy gateway to lead them to your website or inform them of something important!

The highlight covers keep it clean and organized and allow you to separate your content accordingly. So how exactly do you go about creating Instagram highlight covers?

It’s a fairly easy process. First off you can easily find free vector images in many different places. I went to Canva because it was my easiest option. Canva has a whole array of icons you can choose from. What I was looking for were icons I could easily change colors to go on brand with my business and Canva allows me to do that.

Canva is fairly easy to use if you don’t have an account go ahead and create one. Once you’re in you’ll see that you’re able to create a design right off the bat. You have many different options on there, but I chose to create my own design using custom dimensions of 1000 x 1000 pixels.

Once you click design, you’ll see that you have a blank page for you to start.

You’ll see on the left side you have a menu bar with different options. Go ahead and click on Elements and once that populates click on Icons.

Right off the bat you’ll see all the different icons that Canva has free of charge. Everyone’s Instagram highlight covers will be different depending on your business. Click on the icon you see fit. Once you click on it, it will appear on your blank page from there you’ll be able to play around with the sizing and color. I like to make the icon just a tad bit smaller because if it’s too big it will look a little funky on your highlight covers. Make sure you’re still clicking the icon because this will allow you to change the color of the icon which is located in the top middle left (as seen below). If you don’t see the color you’re going for Canva allows you to choose from the color wheel by clicking the plus sign to add a color.

Once there you can add a new page to create different cover pages for your highlights. When you’re done creating the highlight covers go ahead and download each one, you can leave the file as PNG.

You should be able to see the png files downloaded within seconds. Once there go ahead and either email them to yourself in order to access them through your phone or if you’re a Mac users use Airdrop to easily add them to your Photos Library.

Once you have the photos on your phone go ahead and open your Instagram and add all of the covers as stories on your account. Once they’ve been added you have the option to use the icons as Cover Pages. The trick here is making sure that you’re not going to highlight anything you added to your stories before you created these Icon Cover Pages otherwise your cover page will be pointless. I provided a video below of how it should look like!
